Coach Kelly Sheffield on how to design a championship program

Our Wisconsin Coaching Project (WCP) aims to develop highest level coaches of impact in and beyond the state. BIOS was recently joined by UW-Madison Volleyball Coach Kelly Sheffield, who discussed how he designed a championship program. Coach Sheffield focused on the layout and content of the team's "championship manual," he explained how the physical spaces where his team gather shape their interactions, and he provided examples of how items such as body language and eye contact affect communication. All of the coaches in our audience enjoyed learning from Coach Sheffield!

Coach Sheffield described the importance of eye contact in the huddle. The spacing and posture of each team member is purposefully considered in planning for communication during time-outs and other key periods of the team's season.

Coach Sheffield explained how the layout of team spaces like the meeting room and locker room set the tone for how communication unfolds in these spaces.
